I mainly enjoyed the fact it had numerous digital inputs (2-coax, 2-optical, 1-AES/EBU, and USB) and uses separate 192 kHz/32-bit Burr-Brown DACs for each channel. A few years ago, I was able to buy the Onkyo P-3000R preamp which is a 25-lb beast of a preamp with separate power supplies for Digital and Analog sections. I have one more and then I have to go shopping again.I was a rep for Onkyo & Integra from 2001 till 2009 and have remained friends with the Nat'l Sales Mgr in the years after. This will be the second one I've retired in the last two weeks.

Was listening to a McCartney disc earlier tonight with a couple of light scratches and the Playstation went haywire again, skipping all over the place. I can't get into spending more than a few hundred used on a cd machine as most of my collection is vinyl, but I may change my mind soon. The Playstation is more musical, more natural, and easier to listen to than all of them, yet the Playstation is also a joke. A few years ago I tried Arcam, Marantz, Pioneer, NAD, Rotel, Jolida, Music Hall, Quad, Rega, Sony, Philips, etc, a whole bunch of sub-$1000 players and didn't find a single one that was acceptable. Maybe I just don't like cd, but I have a hard time imagining there isn't something better out there. Compared to vinyl, it sounds like what it is: a toy. It's a very cheap temporary player from 1995 that is tolerable until something better comes along. Reliability and disc reading capability is a serious issue. Output is also quite low compared to other players, which could be a problem in some systems. It has what I would call a reasonable tonal balance, though bass extension and impact are unimpressive and so is resolution. Other cd players may be bright, but the Playstation isn't overly warm. Still left enough face time with the SA8005 to allow it to demonstrate enough audio thrills (over the past 6 months or so) to convince me that it exceeded expectations.Ĭlick to expand. The best thing I can say about the Playstation 1 is that it doesn't sound completely horrible. I cannot believe the musical content could be delivered to my amplifier any better by any other available source or media. Powerful, dynamic, explosive and with a clarity that does not present a bit of a sharp edge, harshness, foul note or distortion of any kind. Its sound is natural- make that slightly super natural. The Marantz SA8005 does not have a flavor. If one were to choose between analog and digital flavors, many (myself included) would pick analog. It does not sound like digital, but it does not sound like analog either. I have also read where people think the Marantz SA players sound "analog". Hearing Yvonne Ellerman singing "Con't find my way Home" was the very first time I have heard a stereo sound live- literally live, it was spine tingling. Second thrill was on Eric Clapton "Slowhand" CD reissue with a bonus live disk. Whoever said the Marantz decks were laid back and polite never heard this one. Lightening fast and powerful, regardless of note or place in audible range from deep bass to high end sparkle and all points in between with no hesitation or lagging. The dynamics and explosiveness of this deck are phenomenal. The acoustic guitar snapped out of the speakers and seemed to take on physical dimensions in space. Playing the SACD of Elton John "Captain Fantastic" was the first thrilling experience.
